Salt River Project, a community-based nonprofit public power utility and the largest provider of electricity in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, is offering a new and simple way for customers to support green energy by switching to solar and other renewable energy sources via the SRP EarthWise Energy program. The plan would be especially welcome to customers who want to go green but encounter barriers to actually installing solar systems on their homes or businesses.

Customers enrolled in the EarthWise program choose to supplement 50 or 100 percent of their electricity use with a combination of four types of renewable energy: solar, wind, geothermal and biomass. Customers pay a premium of one cent more per kilowatt-hour for their energy usage, essentially an investment in SRP renewables that helps increase production of renewable energy as SRP purchases replacement renewable energy certificates (RECs) in the marketplace.

“While renewables are more affordable than ever, they still cost more than traditional resources,” said Lori Singleton, Director of SRP Customer Programs and Operations Support. “With SRP EarthWise Energy, customers can match their household or business use with clean energy, help grow demand for renewable energy and make a difference in the environment.”

SRP EarthWise Energy works with all residential prices plans except the M-Power prepaid plan and some business plans. An online calculator is available that provides estimates of the additional monthly cost with EarthWise Energy as well as the environmental impacts.

As of now, sustainable resources provide 14.5 percent of SRP customers’ energy needs, ahead of their schedule to provide 20 percent of their customers’ energy through sustainable resources by 2020. SRP also plans to have more than 700 MW of utility-scale generation online by Fiscal Year 2020, which includes solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, and hydroelectric generation.

To enroll, simply complete the form at www.SRPEarthWise.com or call (602) 236-4448 for residential customers and (602) 236-8833 for business customers.
